Cancer Services of New Mexico's
Family Cancer Resource Bag Program
Being diagnosed with cancer is an overwhelming experience for anyone. It is particularly challenging for those who have children living at home. As a parent, our first instinct is to protect our children from pain; yet, how can we protect them from this?
Cancer Services of New Mexico created the Family Cancer Resource Bag program to help families navigate this difficult process. The program was designed to provide New Mexican parents coping with cancer and their loved ones with some tools and information that can assist them during this challenging time. The kits contain suggestions for talking with children about cancer, books for families to read together, and materials targeted specifically at children aged 4-12 and teenagers.
Pfizer provides financial support for this program. In addition, CancerCare, the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and NCI’s Cancer Information Service donate many of the materials included in the resource bags, and the American Cancer Society, Cancer Family Care, and The Gathering Place have provided permission for us to reprint other materials. Oncology clinics and other cancer services providers throughout New Mexico assist us in distributing the bags throughout the state.
